My only negative comment as far as plot goes is how different the tone is when Shepard confronts Sovereign in Ilos. Sovereign's tone was threatening against all organics. In Mass Effect 3, it has turned softer with the explanation of the Catalyst simply finding a solution to end organics and synthetics. Not the best of answers considering Sovereign's disposition.

Do you mean Virmire? Well Sovereign has his own personality. Just like Harbinger and the Catalyst are different. Sovereign talked about imposing order over the chaos of organics he just didn't explain why because that was left for later.

What was your experience like playing through the first game after playing 3 and seeing the intro in the comic? What were your feelings or impressions?

Oh. That is right. The confrontation between Shepard and Sovereign happened in Virmire. I found Sovereign to be such a well written villain that tonally, it does not seem to match my experience with ME3. Just my two cents.

As for my feedback, I realize that a lot of the lingering questions and mysteries in ME1 no longer seem as interesting because ME3 explains a lot about it, from the Prothean, to the Reapers' purpose. The Genesis comics does a better job covering the overview of ME1's story. Genesis 2 does not, IMO, cover ME2 really well.

From a gameplay perspective, I found ME1 to be antiquated in comparison. ME2 and ME3 polished the combat really nicely that ME1 felt awkward to me. ME1's Mako sequences were infuriating. The vehicle was hard to maneuver and it took way too long to get from one point to another.

ME1 has a lot of immersion touches that was lost in ME2/3 though, like physically walking out of the Normandy. Decontamination process and XO taking over. Subtle details that enhance immersion that was lost in the later games. So many elevators though!

ME1 took much better care over conversation and dialog. There is a sense that you're digging into a conversation organically where as ME2/3 felt "structured" or "categorized".

As far as the plot goes, Shepard's journey was just simply amazing. ME2/3 spoilers will always hover over, but it doesn't totally detract from the game's overall plot of Saren and Sovereign. I wish they had given Saren more time before betraying Nihlus. The betrayal had no emotional tension to it since each of the characters literally appear within the first 5 minutes of the game.

Yes what they do instead is go into Saren's character as you go. You learn about him as Shepard learns about him. I would agree with your immersion points, but with conversation I'd say that got better in 2 and 3. I think ME1 was more structured, didn't quite flow. Also many of Shepard's responses were the same regardless of whether you picked paragon or renegade.

I think the games got better later on but ME1 did have some really epic and iconic moments. Like the stand off with Wrex on Virmire, conversation with Sovereign, and confrontations with Saren. The way Saren jumps off his hovercraft on Virmire may be the best villain entrance ever.

About how many hours did it take? Did you do everything? I need to get around to playing it.

@Matt, it took me about 38 hours according to Steam. I only did all the assignments that were given to me. Funnily, before the final mission, Hackett contacted me for another mission and I just said forget it. LOL! That's another thing worth noting. ME1's side missions are just not good. Just so dull and lots of recycled maps.

@Ness, you are absolutely right about the conversations in ME1 in that many of the responses are actually the same. I also did not like that you could pick seemingly paragon and renegade choices that contradict each other. Charm and Intimidate were not useful and were better off removed in ME2/3.

I find ME2/3 to be much better games, but there was something about ME1's dialogs being written. You could talk to non-important people and get to know them a bit. ME2/3 felt a bit weird and artificial in comparison. I can't explain it, but it always feels like you just ask then get the information and move to the next topic.

Though the Illusive Man, in my eyes, fit the villain role really well in the later games, (Harbinger sadly became a side show in 3), there will never be a character that carried a more physical and adversarial role than Saren. He was just the perfect foil and Sovereign had more character than Harbinger. Shepard's stand off with Sovereign in Virmire was an amazing scene.

The final act with the race to the Citadel and the space battle with Sovereign was executed to absolute perfection, thrilling in a very grand scale. Something the Collector Base never quite matched in terms of the stakes (*cough* the entire galaxy *cough*). The final space battle in ME3 was just the right way to cap it off.

I was also getting some cool flashback moments from ME3 while playing ME1. For example, at the start of the game, Anderson, Shepard and Nihlus watch the video feed when the geth attacks Eden Prime. Somehow, this reminded me of the Earth video feeds when the Reapers attacked Earth.

Another scene was when Vigil explained to Shepard about the Prothean struggles and the stasis pods, I could not help but think of Javik and his scenes. I felt there were many subtle nods visually, not to mention that Saren basically told Shepard about Synthesis!

Just a note. There seems to be some wizardry at play with the face imports from ME1 to ME2! I tried to accept the face and ME2 gave me the face code it used from the squad menu. I try to customize the face in ME2 and entered the very same face code and I get a different face from ME1. Face import unexplained wizardry, courtesy of BioWare!
