Considering how jaded people seem to be about BioWare these days, starting from a new slate seems especially a good idea.

Whatever they decide on, they need an Earth-esque setting since the protagonists are still humans. They need a plot entity to represents a familiar environment as well as the state of human society. Without it, there is no Mass Effect to talk about. With the Mako, it would seem like a possible retread that the humans will be exploring unknown galaxies, planets and new alien societies.

There seems to be a distinct focus on exploration which if anything is basically retreading Mass Effect 1. I hope they have more on their sleeves than just that.

I think they're trying to take more feedback on board with the next game. They probably want to look at what players really liked, what they missed and what they hated. I still think the way to go with the next game is to have multiple playable races for the protagonist. That would make it fresh and would help move it over from the Shepard shadow.

They seem to be really interested in opening up the customization, which is good. I'd like to customize my ship and casual clothing etc. it'll add a personal touch. I think right now they're trying to keep the focus on DAI. They don't want to have two hype trains going at once.

I feel like they have a lot more to show than they're letting on, but they don't want to come out and say "here's the new Mass Effect that'll come out in the next year or two... btw DAI is out in November... sooo"

My personal feeling is that they want to recreate the idea of a person thrown into a totally unknown environment. Broken down to its simplest form, that is exactly what Shepard was. He/She was essentially forced into a new society with unfamiliar territory to navigate through and just trying to get through the day.

With a fresh new story, it is natural that players will be entering a vast new world and there's no perfect vessel than having your character in the game experience the same sensation. Ultimately, I feel it also means forcing players to be humans again, not that that's a bad thing. It's all in how they execute the story.

You are absolutely right that they want people's attention on DA:I, which is why, IMO, they should have just kept things under wraps, you know? It's like reminding people that something big is coming but it's super top secret we can't tell you what. LOL!

You're probably right. They want to get back to basics and look at the strengths and weaknesses of the games. Yeah, I think they do have more on the next ME than they're letting on, but they want to just keep that on the down low until after DAI comes out. Right now I think they just want us to know that they are working on it. Nonetheless, I'm excited to see what they come up with.

I also get the feeling it'll be humans again as it's the most "relatable" character a player has. Ultimately, when being exposed to a new alien society, you always compare it to the society you know. The tricky thing with touching on humanity is that they've established the Sol System and Earth.

Earth is generally fairly close to the usual Shepard travelling routes especially considering that ME3 weaves that place into the main plot. They'd have to setup some colony far, far away that looks like Earth. Some place to ground the players to the idea that the human society is not as different to what is human society now before plucking the players into a totally new environment.

You make good points. I agree. LOL, I remember reading somewhere that people were thinking it would be like Shepard's child with his/her LI or something. That could be... complicated, depending on who you picked for an LI (assuming there is some way for save files to carry over in the next installment).

LOL! What if Shepard chose Steve Cortez or Traynor? Shepard's child, problematic. LOL! It is better to simply tie off Shepard from this whole ordeal.

Exactly! LOL. What if someone didn't romance anybody? Or what if you romanced Thane? What would a turian/human or quarian/human even look like? What if you romanced Miranda (she can't have kids according to the Shadow Broker files)? Too many weird factors to take into account. I guess you could say "they were adopted", but it's just easier to say "Okay, this is our new hero, deal with it"

Also, I've never been a fan of when stories bring in the children of the original protagonist(s) and then the focus switches to the child and then suddenly said child is the new protagonist. I have a few exceptions, but most of the time I hate that kind of thing.

In my opinion, it always a story kind of deal. What is the character journey being told? Is being the offspring of the original protagonist even important? If it is, then, it's not really the story of the kid. It's still about the original protagonist.

For the story to be great to me, it has to be entirely focused on the protagonist of any story. So writing without the idea that it's a kid of some original protagonist is so much easier to deal with.

I find that the child of the original protagonist usually isn't as likable for whatever reason. The struggle of the child is rarely as gripping as the parent's struggle in the original story. On another note, I've been playing Arkham Origins a bit. I'll message you later with my thoughts on it.

I assume it's because it'll inevitably be compared to the original protagonist. Looking forward to your thoughts on Arkham Origins. I'm almost done with Arkham City.
