    You see, Knux wasn't always Sonic's friend. In 1994's Sonic 3, Robotnik (or Eggman) tricks Kunckles into thinking that Sonic & Tails stole the Master Emerald from him. But in Sonic & Knuckles, the red echidna realizes that Robotnik stole the Master Emerald. Robotnik then electrifies Knux, leaving him weak and weary.     Yes, you can play as Knuckles. Just highlight a new file at the Data Select menu, and select a character by pressing ↑ and ↓ on the Control Pad. Eventually, you'll find Knuckles as a playable character. Press one of the Jump buttons, and you're good to go!
