According to Super Mario Wiki, the Japanese website for this game says that Mona's dad is an artist, while her mom is a very busy supermodel. This carries on to the Japanese site for Smooth Moves, where Mona understands Ashley's loneliness due to the loss of her parents. This is pretty elaborate to have a bond between Mona and Ashley.

Ashley is a lot like Elsa the Snow Queen: both have hot tempers and are very distant from everyone, but they wish to have friends and both their parents are deceased.

It also said that Ashley's assistant, Red, wrote her blog about how Ashley remembered the time she had her parents before they passed away. Even though her co-workers praised her, Ashley's hot temper went too far, which she simply wrote, "Everyone...I hate you." Man, I'm sure Ashley's mentality will change when she sometime meets Rosalina, Elsa the Snow Queen, and Wendy O. Koopa.

Rosalina was lonely because of the loss of her mother, Elsa began to freak when everyone saw her ice sorcery, and Wendy feels like an aberration among her brothers. These four characters make a nice group.
