Let me explain how you can do your homework, and research and learn. A very useful technique is called "post mortem". Also known as "After Action" or "battle" report. I simply call it a journal.

    Take my polka dot Snakehead. It's a stealth sub, and I didn't know how to handle it. It's too new. So how do I come up with devastating tactics for it?

    I simply use it and try out as many different tactics as possible. I not what works, and what doesn't. Adjust accordingly. I get better over time. I'll put the rest of the posts in spoiler as I'm getting rather specific in tactics.

    Conclusion: Stealth works! It always amazes me when someone ignores me completely, letting me shoot him 4-5 times as they go by in a straight line. By that time, I'm no longer masked, of course, so why not evade? Because they don't see me! They have tunnel vision of attacking my teammates! I'm really the last sub they hunt.

    Update: I'll mention the obvious. Expect to be sunk if you unmask in front of enemy. Also there's occasional double damage. These are outliers. Be aware of them, but don't worry too much. Don't be stupid. Don't depend on luck. Do learn from your mistakes, and celebrate your success.

    No. There's no good way to do it. You don't need me for premium, anyway. Look at the level progression on 8/20. That was done with Garfish, no crew. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with that sub before you move on, anyway. In the mean time, you can do chores and/or save your pennies.

    Do extra. Go above and beyond. Or sell old stuff you no longer need. Plenty of ways to make money if you really want to. For just a one-time income of $10, it's really not that hard. And if you do manage to do it that way, it'll be better anyway.
