    Well, Final Fantasy characters were in Mario Slam Basketball for DS Lite. Yeah, Black Mage was there along with Light Mage, Red Ninja, and the weird flying adorable mouse thing. I forgot its name. :]

    Its a moogle. Anyway, The point is that Squeenix has moved away from Nintendo systems for anything other than quirky spinoffs and Final Fantasy is, while popular, way less faithful to Nintendo than Shin Megami Tensei, which is also a JRPG that codified quite a few tropes of the genre.

    It's mostly for IP wrangling reasons. It's not impossible (look at Sonic and Snake) but I’m guessing square enix want to keep a tight grip on their ip (which is also sad for me because this means no chrono trigger characters are likely to show in a future smash title any time soon). Still, not as unlikely as banjo kazooie characters showing up now that microsoft own them.
