Someone care to tell me what I did to earn a gold star on top of the flagpole? Apparently this was the only I earn it in.

That is Rosalina's symbol, each character has a different one.

I meant, on top of the flagpole, there's green stars on every level I've completed, except this one in particular has a golden one.

The green star on top of the flagpole means all the green stars in the level was found. A gold star means the level was 100% competed. 3 green stars, stamp, touching the top of the pole, and beating..
