LEGO® STAR WARS™: The Force Awakens

...and that right there is why I think I like LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens better than the movie itself--the movie expects you to take it seriously as a follow-up to the Original Trilogy it so freely borrows from, while this game is "in on the joke" (so to speak) when it comes to Kylo Ren, the First Order, the overall plot of Episode VII, and just about everything else.

...from considering the Force a myth or a legend to suddenly gaining new abilities as the plot requires--no backstory, no explanation. At least Luke had Obi-Wan to tell him a little about his father being a Jedi (even if he didn't tell him everything just yet). Speaking of Luke, we were told it was (supposedly) a big deal that he wasn't appearing in any of the trailers. The real reason? ...

He's just not in the movie at all, except for one quick scene right at the end. Sure, the director probably thought he was being clever by having Luke barely be involved in a story that, technically, is all about finding him. But it's still a big letdown, having him sit on the sidelines the entire time. So the next movie should dive into Rey's past at least a little, and it should give Luke...

...something to do besides stand around on a planet somewhere waiting for one of the new heroes to find him. Also, if it was up to me, Han would still be alive. His death really taints the experience that much for me. More generally, a year ago at this time, I imagined Episode VII being as different from the Original Trilogy as Episode I--not just a reimagined (and that's being generous)...

...version of Episode IV: A New Hope with several unexpected changes. Sure, there would be familiar characters and spaceships (there will always be a place for Luke, Leia, Han, the droids, the Millennium Falcon, etc. in Star Wars), but with the Empire gone, circumstances in the galaxy would be...

I thought that Han death was unnecessary. The only reason it's there so they can have the obligatory "I am your Father" moment with Kylo Ren being Ben Solo. The death doesn't add anything to the movie.

Actually, another thing I would change. How did R2-D2 suddenly reactivate himself? Not explained.

...noticeably different. Maybe the New Republic has been formed, maybe the heroes are called back into action when some new enemy--and I mean truly new, not just Vader Lite and his army of Imperial wannabes--threatens the hard-won peace after the Empire's downfall, maybe we see the next generation of Skywalkers take up their lightsabers to defend the galaxy against a new Sith threat. And yeah...

...I know a little bit of this actually did make it into the movie. But the Episode VII we got still feels a little too much like "been there, done that"/a better version of this story has already been told...in 1977. Like I said, I never mapped out an entire story for the movie. But I hope the gives you some idea of what I was expecting--and I hope the next two movies' directors aren't...

...afraid to get outside the Original Trilogy "comfort zone" a little more and make a new Star Wars film, not a middle-of-the-road "update" of an old one. Oh, and don't kill off any more of the classic heroes.

I don't care if in the next movie they have to make a few people angry because it's not exactly the same as the original trilogy. I just hope the next one has an original story. Also, Captain Phasma needs a bigger role.

R2-D2 is something I'm not totally clear on myself. They say in the movie that he went into a low-power state after Luke disappeared (which to me sounded like an excuse to keep him out of the spotlight for BB-8, but I'm biased), and I read somewhere that he was sorting through the past several decades' worth of his data while "sleeping," as one of the only characters present for all 7 movies...

...to date. But as for why he "woke up" right at that moment, I'm not sure. My best guess is that he may have detected that the other part of the star map showing Luke's location was nearby, and they needed the last piece (which R2-D2 had in his memory) to complete it. I'm glad you asked, though, because this kind of thing was a (minor) problem I had with the movie--that you had to read all...

...of this supplementary material to bridge the gap between VI and VII, and understand some of what was going on. But at least that won't be a problem next time. As for Captain Phasma, you're in luck: they claim she'll have a larger part in the next movie. I'm guessing her conflict with Finn is just getting started. So, about what the movie does better than this game... To start with, LEGO...

...games in general tend to condense the story a little for their pre-, post-, and mid-level scenes. This isn't a bad thing--after all, you want to spend most of your time playing a game, not watching it. But as with any movie, there's nothing like seeing the story in its full, original, un-edited form. You also get to see what the characters actually look like. Don't get me wrong, LEGO...

...Stormtroopers literally going to pieces after you blast them is hilarious, but having almost everyone mapped to the same LEGO minifigure body shape sometimes makes characters less distinct-looking--it's not a big problem, but it's there. I also noticed that the game tends to use a lot of Original Trilogy music over the new soundtrack (but depending on who you ask, that might be an improvement).

Oh, and you can do a lot with HD graphics today, but the special effects in a live-action movie--like when the Hosnian System is destroyed, or when Starkiller Base itself blows up (first the thermal oscillator, then the entire planet)--still look better. You really have to see the movie to fully appreciate those scenes.

To hhj: If you're still out there using Miiverse, you've probably heard the news by now: Miiverse service--and many associated functions in different games, the Wii U system menu, etc.--is scheduled to be terminated in about two months' time (11/7/17, 10 pm PT). I was thinking that maybe after The Last Jedi has its theatrical release in a few months, we could talk about it here.

But it looks like that won't be possible now. Whether The Last Jedi succeeds or fails, Miiverse will be long gone by mid-December. Anyway, if you're interested, you can read all about Miiverse's planned discontinuation and how to get a saved copy of your posts in the announcement here and on Nintendo's support site. May the Force be with you.
