I've been on a huge classic game binge for the past few weeks. In just the last couple of days, I've completed Ys III, The Goonies, The Goonies II, Jaws, Bomberman 94, Super Bomberman, and The Guardian Legend. It's been years since I last played most of them.

I've gotten a little burned out on new stuff, so I'm taking a bit of a break. Everything now is just way too long. It's hugely refreshing to go back to the era of games where most of them can be beaten in a few hours instead of devoting weeks and months to a single game.

Not quite as classic but... I've been stuck in bed cause of my back so I started up my old save of Disgaea from 10+ years ago (since the PS2 is in the bedroom) and put another 100 hours in. I also replayed Majora's Mask with my new Hori minipad and 100%ed the game in record time, so much fun with a working controller.

Have you tried the 3DS remake of Majora's Mask? Aside from the swimming and a couple of other questionable changes, it's really very good. And having camera control with the Circle Pad Pro makes it even better.

I 100%ed it. It was okay but I felt it was really lacking the charm of the original, mainly because MM was considered one of the most graphically impressive games on the N64, not to mention overflowing with content, and you could really see where they struggled to get it all to run relatively smoothly. MM3D doesn't necessarily look bad, but it's just hard to be impressed with it.

I just also feel that games like OoT and MM, which were released for home consoles to be played on a large screen at a distance, don't have the same feel when played on a handheld. It's difficult to describe the dissonance, but it kind of cheapens the experience for me. I had been really hoping for a high budget home console remake like that one concept trailer that was popular on Youtube.

But really, the one thing that ruined it for me was changing the Zora swimming controls. I LOVED Great Bay in the original, and I loved being able to master the swimming controls to get things done FAST. The requirement of expenditure of MP to go just a little faster (not even as fast as in the original) killed the entire segment for me, and left me kinda burnt out for the rest of the game.

Yeah, swimming as a Zora was my favorite thing in the entire game, and they destroyed it.

I don't get the same feeling as you when I play on my 3DS, though. I can get just as sucked in to the 3DS as I can to a console. Sometimes more so, since the 3DS screen is usually right up in my face.

Thought I was the only one that liked the Zora segments so much, a lot of people freak out over any water-themed dungeon.

I do like the 3DS but for certain games I like to be able to sit back and take in what's happening on the TV while I mostly just ignore the fact that I'm holding a controller. It's a matter of comfort, it doesn't ruin the game for me, but if you gave me the option I'd rather play it on the TV. Really just a personal preference.

I don't get people's phobia of water levels in Zelda games. Ocarina's water temple is just not as confusing as people say it is. Majora's Mask's isn't exactly straightforward, but if you just go room by room turning the valves, you'll get through it.

OoT's Water Temple is just very slow and tedious. There are TONS of rooms and if you don't do them in a particular order you have to backtrack a lot. Then there's having to change the water level and constantly equipping and unequipping the iron boots. It's just not a fun dungeon compared to all the earlier ones.

On the other hand, Great Bay Temple is fairly straightforward as long as you understand early on that you gotta open all the valves to get water to the water wheel, it really is just going from one room to the next, and swimming between them is so much fun compared to trudging around in the iron boots. Using ice arrows to make platforms was also really creative, and Wart was an awesome miniboss.

When you think about it, it's a matter of (perceived) speed and control. If the player feels artificially slowed down it's going to be a frustrating experience. Same with clunky controls like pausing and unpausing to put on the boots that make you walk slow. TP's swimming controls were clunky, so Lakebed Temple was pretty meh, but SS's swimming controls were great and so was the Ancient Cistern.

So what's Disgaea? I've heard the title before, but I don't know anything about it.

It's a tactics RPG. It's a similar structure to the Final Fantasy Tactics games but a lot more complex and kinda ridiculous. Like the level cap is 9,999, you can level your items up and you can level up the stat-boosting residents INSIDE your items. The game encourages a lot of minmaxing and exploiting to get OP characters to take on really tough post game challenges.

The story is pretty good too. Nothing fantastic but it has a good (very wacky) sense of humor which is something a lot of tactics games lack entirely. There's a remake of the first game for the PS3 and Vita called Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness if you're interested (original was called Hour of Darkness on the PS2). It's a massive time sink though, so beware of what you're getting into lol.

Over-complicated systems like that tend to turn me off, so it doesn't sound like it's for me. Plus, I don't own a PS3 or Vita. I think I'll just stick with Military Madness and Fire Emblem for strategy games.

Yeah the complexity is a bit of a barrier for entry. The Fire Emblem games tend to break up a lot of elements into simpler, distinct segments, whereas the Disgaea games expect you to keep track of (and micromanage) everything at once. It really is a niche series and if you're the right kind of person it will suck you in but otherwise it can be exceptionally grindy and tedious.
