  • Oh SNAP, I didn't even realieze I hit 400 followers! For the people that comment, what should I do to celebrate? A Q and A? A request post? Maybe make some adoptable OCs?

  • I'd say request post! You haven't done one for awhile... Any tips on large grasslands?

  • Sure! Don't focus on drawing each individual blade of grass. As objects are moved farther into the background they become faded. Objects in the foreground however should be in greater detail. Darken the patches as they move back, and make the grass in front light and more vivid. The smudge tool is your ally for creating a fur or grass like texture when you push the light tones onto the dark tones

Congrats on 400+ followers! Maybe you could try making some adoptable OCs. Also, could you give me some tips on drawing skies and bodies of water?

  • Is it better to do the background first (or foreground or middle-ground) or the subject of the drawing first? And maybe a request post.

  • @Dal, I'll sure as peas try! For skies and bodies of water try to use multiple colors, not just one shade of blue. The smudge stick tool is perfect for this. For water, add white streaks as it comes closer to the foreground giving it the effect of crashing waves.

  • @RS, block out your main subject with pencil first, and if you use ink, go ahead and ink it before creating a background. Then you should start with the furthest back scenery working your way forward into more detail. If you start with a detailed foreground, it becomes difficult to draw your background around that.

  • Thank you. The only did backgrounds on apps that have multiple layers. Rarely, did I make backgrounds. I really appreciate the advice.

  • It's cool, I'm working on the 400 follower drawing and I'm completely ignoring a background. If your foreground subject is complex enough, a simplistic background to contrast the subject matter is best.

  • Um, this question is kinda related to this I guess... Do you have tips on drawing rain in the background while the clouds are parted in the foreground, giving it all a kinda surreal thing?

  • Thetruegge- best reference for distant rain, look the the background landscape in The Lion King. If you blur the background clouds diagonally it creates a real nice rain effect.

  • Haha, I was just requested to draw that!

  • I actually saw the comment of the person who requested that, which got me thinking of grovyle, which got me thinking of my friend, which got me thinking of this eulogy poem she wrote for him, and then I just had the perfect idea of what to draw. It's turning out quite nicely, I think.
