    Here's a close-up of the serpent enemy. I never noticed it had a large mouth and teeth. It glows, too. It's the mirage dragon, they just added fins.

    As soon as I saw them I thought "This seems familiar...", then I took a closer look. There's no way it's not an intentional throwback. In general I think there's a lot more SNES homages in this game than it's given credit for. Teasing the future perhaps?
