Norwegian only has æ, ø and å extra. Icelandic has á, ð, é, í, ó, ú, ý, þ, æ and ö. They also don't have z.

Ooh, interesting! I knew about þ, but not about the lack of z. Do you happen to know if they have to subsitute it in foreign words and if so, how? (e. g. if their keyboards don't have a 'z' key or something) Also do they count their special characters when citing the alphabet? Over here it's just a - z, without special characters (and if they're included, ß is often skipped).

Their keyboards would have z, w, q and c, but I believe á, é, í, ó, ú and ý are made with a dead key for the accent. And Icelandic makes foreign words by localising them with Icelandic words. They are part of the alphabet, so, yes, they recite the alphabet with them. a, á, b, d, ð, e, é, f, g, h, i, í, j, k, l, m, o, ó, p, r, s, t, u, ú, v, x, y, ý, þ, æ, ö.

I sound like a broken record, but this is really interesting! Accents are always added through that universal accent key, aren't they? German keyboards have it, too, despite not using any in our own language (save for foreign names and certain loan words). I never understood why they omit special characters when citing the alphabet over here. Except for font displays, that is, but not verbally.

Yeah, they are. I think it'd be because ä, ö, ü are just sound changes, and ß is another thing too, while those letters of the Icelandic alphabet are actual letters.

They might be similar to other letters, but completely changes a word's meaning whether you use them or not and substitutes are only used when you have no way of typing the actual characters (or if the respective system can't handle them). The dot removal thing (ä -> a) is plain wrong and they're short versions of other characters (æ). They're used very frequently, too. Hence why I find it weird.
