My theory is single player already happened by the time you take the cartridge out of the freshly opened Splatoon 2 box. You are just playing a flashback to see how Octarians integrated with the rest of society.

So, Marie was Team Marshmallows the whole time? PLOT TWIST!!! XD @Girafarig Interesting story mode theory! That would be a creative way of working it in. :o One thought that occurred to me though: maybe the Octarians and Inklings have been on good terms for some time, but Octavio and his followers refused to accept the change? ... Eh, who knows at this point? ;P
