    Pearl is Hime in the Japanese version and Hime Ika is what Japan calls the specific specie Northern Pygmy Squid. At least canon supports the size difference this time.

    Based on the Splatfest demo dialogue, looks like Marina is very shy and nervous based on some of the dialogue and body language. She probably feels nervous about fitting in with the rest of society. The dtnamic probably is lil Pearl will fight anyone mean to big Marina. How ironic is this will probably be the dynamic in canon but in fandom it is Pearl who needs defending.

    I only just watched the Splatoon 2 Direct trailer, and I loved it! Man I REALLY wish I could afford one...[If only they made it for the Wii U] If you ask me, I think Off the Hook is probably gonna be the new squidtastically fresh band. But I'm still a fan of the Squid Sisters. Did everyone like Marina? I mean, people would like to see some Octolings in Inkopolis, so Nintendo gave us Marina!

    I wish everyone'd show their Marina love a little less harshly. Most of what I've seen it comes with also calling Pearl ugly and evil.

    @Girafarig: That's very interesting! "Hime" also means "princess" in Japanese, which is fitting, since my impression of Pearl was, "Wow, somebody's a real /princess/."

    It makes me kinda sad that they replaced Callie and Marie. I guess Pearl and Marina will be okay, but I like the Squid Sisters better, they seem slighty more relateable for some reason. But I kinda like how Marina's an Octoling, adds some flair.

    It's probably intended as a double meaning. Marina is Iida from Iidako and that is the Japanese name for Ocellated Octopus. Not sure what the literal meaning is though.

    @Girafarig: The most I could find about the name "Iida" is that it's a Japanese surname that's made of the characters that mean "cooked rice patty". I have no idea if that meaning is intended or not. It's also apparently a Finnish form of "Ida".
