  • Microsoft's personal computer software business is no longer considered an engine of growth! Microsoft's Xbox brand remains highly profitable! Microsoft has a global head count of 121,500 people which had increased in the last few years. The one major work force cutback at Microsoft came in 2014 when 18,000 jobs were elimated after Satya Nadella succeeded Steven Ballmer as chief executive!

  • Mr. Nadella quickly determined that Microsoft's $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's mobile phone business in 2014 was a failure & started selling off pieces & closing it down! Most of the job cuts at the time were related to Nokia. A year later Microsoft took a $7.6 billion write-off. Compare these numbers to Nintendo & you can see how small a company Nintendo is compared to it's competition!

Well thats comparing apples to oranges. Nintendo is purely a gaming company. Microsoft is a tech company with their hands in every aspect of the computing industry (business and personal).

  • @Lex - True, though Nintendo is a software & hardware maker & into online services but just not as big or as much as Microsoft is! Just making the comparison to show Microsoft could stick it out longer with the Xbox if things went south than Nintendo could do with their systems.

Nintendo has been around for over a 100yrs. Pretty safe to say they can ride out any downturns in their cyclical business.

  • But doing business these days is much different than doing business 100 years ago! But yeah, they survived this long, they know what they are doing.. for the most part! :-)
