    Alright, so what I think is happening is first off, as usual, Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach and heads to his newly decorated Airship. Mario of course finds out about this and triumphantly after the "tutorial" level approaches Bowser. They both engage in battle. The king is nearly taken down until he unleashes his new attack to use his hat as a boomerang.

    Mario manages to dodge it the first time, but as the hat swings around and flies back, it hits the plumber and Mario is sent flying overboard.... without his cap. His cap lands right below Bowser's feet as he reduces it to nothing but the emblem and kicks off the Airship. A few moments later, Mario wakes up in a ghoulish place known as Bonneton, a landmark in the Cap Kingdom. Here, he meets Cappy.

    Cappy looks upon the remains of Mario's Cap and transforms into it. Cappy can now change forms between Mario's Cap and his normal top hat-like state. Mario then swings him towards a frog by accident. Mario flies into the air and into the frog. Now, it is revealed that Mario can use Cappy to possess certain objects and things. Meanwhile..

    Back at Bonneton, Mario and Cappy form a friendship. Suddenly, a small Airship appears and takes over the lighthouse. Mario and Cappy reach the lighthouse and meet the Broodal, in which they were there to steal various hats for the wedding. One of them (it isn't known) decides to attack the duo and eventually loses. Before retreating, they drop a Grand Moon.

    Mario grabs the Grand Moon and is bedazzled to what it is. Cappy then unveils his ship, the Odyssey. The Grand Moon powers up the engine as it flies away with Cappy and Mario to the Metro Kingdom. They arrive at New Donk City, a landmark in the Kingdom. They gaze upon the strange lifeforms living there, as Mario reunites with his long-time friend, Pauline.
