Why does Zelda need to have multiple timelines? Why couldn't it be a simple timeline with prequels and sequels?

    the Dark World in ALttP is the Sacred Realm in OoT after Ganondorf seized the Triforce. If Link is defeated by Ganon: it doesn't disappear like it should when you beat OoT.

    As soon as Ganondorf layed hands on the Triforce, the Sacred Realm was changed into the Dark World. Even though the Triforce was split, it was still transformed and would say that way until ALttP Link defeated. I have a theory on the Sacred Realm in my post. You might have to do some digging to find it

    The Downfall timeline was necessary, it was the only way to explain the differences between ALttP's backstory and OoT's ending. And OoT's ending required a timeline split, since it literally showed two different endings based on timeline differences.

    If anything, from a development standpoint the downfall timeline is the original timeline and OoT simply created two new branches as alternate paths for Hyrule. That's the timeline where the original story told in the first Zelda games fell into, the concept of OoT was created to branch off of those games, not the other way around.

    So it's really only in hindsight that the downfall timeline seems tacked on. Like I said, as far as development is concerned the downfall timeline is the original.

    Hyrule Warriors is in its own timeline.There's a thing, Heroes: 1st: Chosen Hero 2nd: Hero of the Minish 3rd: Four Swords' Link 4th: The Adult Hero of Time Now, here's how it splits through timelines.

    My point being that if the Hero of Time defeats Ganon, both the Hero of Time and Hero of Winds' adventures can co-exist in the same universe, just alternate dimensions. If Link is killed by Ganon, the Hero of Twilight and Hero of Winds' Timelines will never come into existence. It changes the LoZ universe entirely.

    Watch this video on Youtube: Legend of Zelda Timeline(With Breath of the Wild) uploaded by Commonwealth Realm It's like an hour long, but it helps know ALL of LoZ's timeline from creation to the end of all 3 branches from Ocarina of Time.

    This is a few years old, but GameTrailers did a wonderful break down explanation of the Zelda games and history of the Timeline (both release and chronological). It's broken up into 3 parts, the last part is the Timeline itself but the whole thing is worth a watch. I believe it titled ' Timeline: the Legend of Zelda '
