    I can actually explain why the scientist might want the ketchup bottle. Ketchup is one of very few "Non-Newtonian Fluids", which are fluids that do not follow Newton's Law of Viscosity. ...Long story short, this gives it properties very few things have, which may explain why the scientist would want it. Maybe they want it for research, or maybe it's special properties help in battle somehow.
