Is the Wii U Gamepad required to play this game?

My Wii U Gamepad stopped charging so I need to know before purchasing this.

    I actually use the same controls as in DKC Returns, with a Wii remote and nunchuck. Even with the gamepad, the screen turns off, so it doesn't change much.
