My head cannot comprehend hand anatomy for drawing, so I need a lot more practice.

  • Nice hand drawns! I agree, hands are a fudge to draw. XD Um is it alright with you, do you mind if you can give short tutorials how to draw hands here? I'm really bad drawing them but I like to know some tips. It may be also good practise for you more to draw hands too. You really don't have to though, but thanks! ^^;

  • Oh wow, thank you so much!!! I would be happy to, but just so you know, I am still learning myself, haha! It'll take me some time, but I will post something in the comments! I learned my basics (& basics for drawing poses&anatomy in general) from a Youtuber named Draw With Jazza, so if you get time, I would highly recommend watching some of his videos! His videos are simple and easy to follow!

  • You're welcome talented artist! ^_^ Ooh, I'll check out that YouTuber then. Normally when I draw hands, I go in different style like making fingers rectangular or blocky (even loose 'french fries'. sadly..DAAAAHHH). Going that style is a bit easier, but still hard. XD I look forward for your tutorials if you're planning. If you can't, that's okay. Thanks for the advice though! :D

  • Jazza does more comicbook style with his drawings, but they are also very good in general for drawing!

  • To start, when I draw hands, I always use a reference, but learning the fundamentals for how a hand moves, twists, and overall shapes makes it 10x easier to draw said references because it's easier to comprehend it. Since I've made this little tutorial, it actually kept getting easier and easier, and some of the ones at the end I didn't even use one!

  • I draw the palm in the shape of a trapezoid/squarish shape. Drawing it like it's 3d helps to see were your starting. For fingers, I start with simple lines coming off the palm. For anatomy in general, I like to draw small circles were the joints are, so I can see were joints would bend/ move. If it helps to draw the fingers as cylinders first, then go for it!

  • For most fingers, there would be 2 of these circles, because there are 3 digits (or bones) in the finger. The thumb only has 2 digits though, so I only use 1 circle for the joint. ( Hope that makes sense!)

  • I drew this hand with the 3d effect, and it makes it a lot easier to envision were you would place the fingers. For me, draw a hand from the side is the easiest. If the hand is a straight side view, I just draw the palm a a rectangle. With this, the biggest focus should be the thumb and index finger. The other fingers can be tucked or relaxed behind the index finger.

  • Another thing it took me a few times to get too was that the palm doesn't have to be a straight, solid shape. Palms can slightly curve in, especially when it grips an object, so don't be afraid to experiment!

  • Learning how to draw a fist has been very important for me when I draw. If you can draw a simple fist a multiply angles, it helps tremendously when you start drawing hands that grip onto rods shaped objects, like swords, pencils, or hiking sticks. Tbh, I don't really know how to explain much on drawing fists. ^^' I always look at my own hands or references when I draw fists.

  • Overall, the more you practice, the easier it will get! Do not be afraid to experiment, or restart a hand when your drawing it! I usually end up restarting something when I draw hands. And again REFERENCES ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND! If you Google search "hand references" and you will literally get 100's of hand photos and drawings that are great! If there is a certain poses...

  • You are trying to draw and can't find, try using your own hand as reference! Sometimes, you can't use your own hand just by looking, so I take pictures of angles with my phone sometimes. I would recommend looking at real hands too rather than other drawings starting out. Sometimes when you start off drawing from someone elses drawings rather than real, you could pick up things that are...

  • Anatomically incorrect, depending on the style. Like for me, I tend to draw fingers longer than usually because I have longer fingers than "average" (my secret is revealed! Lol), but my art style also leans towards semi-realism and western comic style. The more you draw, the faster you'll learn what your own style is! I hope this helps some, I'm not great at explaining things sometimes. (′v`)

  • AAH! Thanks so much providing tips and tutorials! You did all for me, I can't express how helpful and awesome you are. :D. *hugs you tightly* I'm generally an anime artist, but I think one major problem I'm having because I don't know an actual anatomy of the hands. I better get onto that someday lol. I'll also use your drawings as references. I wish I could do some sketch here to try your

  • tutorial here. Then after I finish sketching, you could help correct how my hand drawing could improve. But I can't sketch in this post, darn it Miiverse. XD Anyway, I'll definitely try out this tutorial sometime. Thanks so much for the help Madison!

  • Your very welcome! I'm glad it helped! I went ahead and sketched this out real quick, but this is a simplified bone structure of the hand. You can see the joints in the fingers that would bend, so hopefully this helps you a little bit with a basic idea on how hand anatomy is! (^ ^)

  • Yayyy! :D Ah the bone structure seems complicated. XD Is it mandatory to know all the bone structures to master drawing hands, and bodies?

    Yeahs1
  • Not at all! If you can draw the first hand I did on the left, that can be used as your "bones". Knowing the bone structure just helps more to understand how the hand functions and moves. If you can draw the trapazoid shaped palm, some lines coming off as fingers, and learn where the fingers bones would be, you got your skeleton. ('ω')
