Take the walker through the alternate route on corneria. Hit the button on the ground midway through the level. There will be other levels you'll have to play before the asteroid field

There are alternate routes in the game like "destroy the core". Every boss has an alternate way to defeat it more efficiently. In some cases it's a play-style choice. Every level is designed so people can play for a high score (hits) or a fastest time. That's why it seems confusing. There are literal alternate routes that will take you to a new level too... On Corneria you'll see a grey gate to the right, but there's a button on the ground in front of it. Turn into the walker and land on the button. It'll take you to a whole new level.

Gotta go back and save the cornerian pilot on corneria. He'll have a bunch of those spider robots on his ship. Destroy all of them to take the teleporter. You should see him immediately after pressing the button and going through the tunnel.

The portal isn't opening? Odd. You can take too long to save him then it'll redirect you to the first boss. It looks like you have the portal open on Corneria. See it on the map.
