#28 February 1, 2013. That was an interesting day for me, and it didn't gave any right to be. I had just got home from work and found that my stepdad, whom I live with, was absent. It was 10 PM, and I wound up having to adjust things in the house accordingly, such the pets and the thermostat. Once everything was finished, I decided to relax and think about what do, only to realize something.

  • What did you notice?

  • I was bored. I wanted to play a game, but I didn't want to start something long. I was also in the mood for something, and just pondered what to do. I decided to see if there was something on the Playstation Store that could tide me over, and that's when I noticed a game I was always interested in was on PSN, even though it had been available for about two years: Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.

  • I figured, what the heck and decided to purchase it just to see what I missed. I picked up the controller, and I didn't put it down until after Midnight when I finished it. It's definitely an indicator that it was easy and on the short side, but it had been a while since I had marathoned a game like that, and I don't think I've done that since. It shows just how enjoyable it was.

  • (28)Klonoa: Door to Phantomile lives by a very simple, yet ingenious gimmick. Every Mascot Platformer has a unique gimmick that sets it apart from others, whether it be Sonic's speed, Mega Man's Mega Buster, or Yoshi's egg-tossing mechanic. Klonoa's mechanic is the "Wind Bullet". When used, Klonoa will grab an enemy and inflate them like a balloon, holding them above his head.

  • After an enemy s grabbed, Klonoa can throw it forward, upward, into the background, into the foreground, or down while in midair to use as a double jump. It's such a simple idea, and yet it's put to such excellent use that it becomes addictive even though it's something you'll use frequently. I enjoyed myself so much, I wound up the Wii remake and the sequel on the PS2.

  • Unfortunately, this gameplay wasn't enough to keep the feisty cat out of obscurity, as despite Namco's best efforts to revive the series with the Wii remake, Klonoa has since vanished, never to be seen again outside of rereleases. Here's hoping that Namco will consider giving him another chance down the road.

  • Oh, and if for whatever reason you're curious why I chose the original game over the sequel, it's simply because...I haven't finished it yet. It's one game, that I intend to get off my backlog during my vacation next month, so depending on how I enjoyed it compared to the original, I might have to update #28 before Miiverse is shut down.

  • Yeah, it's too bad Klonoa hasn't had any new games in a while.

  • He's gotten some spin-offs on the GBA, with two of them localized and released on the Wii U eShop. I hope he gets another chance someday.

  • At least he's getting a movie, although I'm not sure when it'll release.

  • Everyone's getting a movie now it seems like... well everyone except Nintendo characters.

  • I think after the Super Mario Bros. movie Nintendo has been reluctant to try it again. Considering Bob Hoskins, who played Mario in the movie, has gone on record for despising his role in the movie, that may well have been the death knell for it.

  • I hope Nintendo does eventually try again: they have so many ip's that could have great as movies.
