VGC player: "Why are special Pokemon like Mew and Celebi not allowed?" Tournament staff: "Because they can only be obtained through special distributions and promotions, and not everyone can obtain them." (To be continued)

  • Great logic if you ask me.

What about Ash-Greninja? Doesn't that follow the same logic as event Hidden Abilities and moves? I mean, they actually do ban it from rating or special seasons, one of those(I saw it on Serebii). But that's just a single banned non-Legendary/Mythical event out of hundreds. I really don't get it.

It also makes no sense to allow event only moves/Abilities and ban Phione, Cosmog, and Cosmoem. Wouldn't it be like if Smash Bros had a fourth custom move that was DLC only and could be used against others online? I can guarantee you all they would ban it in an instant, even those online modes that allow customs.

  • I don't know about the smash bros example, their dlc can be purchased anytime. Apart from that I completely agree that events should only be treated as little gifts for fun with no competitive edge. However, they seem to not care for competitions for the most part. They barely check legality and the developers are one of the worst when it comes to game balance.

It's such a shame. Pokemon is my favorite Nintendo franchise, as well as my favorite video game franchise of all time. It really doesn't deserve such horrible tournament ruleset planners or makers. It desperately needs to be under new, better management. Unfortunately, they'd rather choose not to hire an experienced, professional team to run VGC and its ruleset. It's always whatever they want.

  • I know… it's such a shame that Nintendo is such a backwards company. It's really weird when someone like Sakurai says "smash has no competitive future", when he flippin releases an online For Glory mode, with a win/loss ratio to gauge skill level which helps in spectate bets, and gives it multiple balance patches.

  • Plus that tournament before release which had multiple melee veterans.

Given their many, many extremely questionable decisions for the quality of their multiplayer or competitive scenes, it's kind of a wonder why they still even have so many fans after countless ways of disappointing players and customers in general, be it their marketing choices and lack of systems in stock on store shelves, or removing neat features from their games. Just needs improvement overall.

I really do want the company to be as great as it can be. I would by far rather play their games than those of their competitor companies, as they're much more original with a variety of franchises, instead of releasing the same old sports game or shooter game with every sequel. But I wonder how much better all those marketing decisions are for their competing companies.

  • I think it's because of how powerful Nintendo was back in the day, focussing on the video game crash. The medium for games seemed like a wasteland and was going to die out, until the first Mario came about and changed the face of gaming as we see it today. They were seen as titans, and nothing compared to it in the slightest, until Sega topped it and rivalled it for a short time.

  • To this day, the loyalty fans have for them is unparalleled as far as gaming goes, they can pretty much do anything and millions will either put up or defend them. Including the lack of online features for today's standard, gimmicky features forced on players making the experience worse, the youtube take-down stuff, and other things in general.

  • Sadly, we both fall into this love-hate category with Nintendo. It never used to be this way though I'm fairly sure. In the early days of the Wii and prior, they were bursting with potential. Now it's just focused gimmicks and recycled Mario, Kirby, and Pokémon games with next to no changes. Their kid friendly image might have sunk a little too far into their mentality.

  • But alas, whenever I walk into a gaming shop, their titles are always the ones I look at first before turning away at effectively the same title years ago. Checking the ps4 and xbox stuff out though, I don't know. The games just don't resonate with me. I'm sure they're good but, I grew up with creative worlds full of colour and imagination. When I see them, I see a dark version of a cold reality.

I wonder what the future is for the Switch. There's only a few games unique to the system, while the rest are just Wii U game ports, being Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, and I think Splatoon, and soon to be Pokken Tournament DX, only with previous DLC exclusives now normally obtainable.

    Yeahs0
  • Or something really boring. Funny thing is though, I grew up more on the Playstation lol, they just don't make the kid stuff anymore which I have the soft spot for, where Nintendo seems to be the only one targeting that demographic. Then again, kid games are Cod and stuff, I feel bad for kids these days… Sorry for the 3am ramble.

  • splatoon 2 is a new game, and botw came out for switch the same day as wiiu so i don't think it counts as a port atleast it'll be getting xenoblade and FE:W soon, with xenoblade guaranteed to be a massive game

What do you guys think of the announced main series Pokemon for the Switch, coming out in a few more years? Do you think version exclusives will be a thing of the past, since it sounds like it's a stand alone game?

    Yeahs1
  • I've got nearly no opinion on it since nothing's revealed yet, we've got Sun & Moon 2 to get through first, and that's looking pretty bad so far in my opinion. I would like it if the Switch game involved more multiplayer options.T here's at least chat related options through the phone app thing, so there's very little that can go wrong in that area unless they disable it or something stupid.

  • Uhh, a new region with Pokémon in, even the low number they do with now along with updated graphics would probably justify most sales, but I feel they'd have to add more Pokémon and features to maybe get more Switch sales too since many people of the fanbase don't own one, me included. Speaking of Sun & Moon 2, the game's out in about two months, but we've seen next to no leaks.

  • About version exclusives, I think they'll stay, along with the lack of extra save files. They make almost 1.5x profit with effectively two copies of the same game as opposed to one.
