Review #2: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D

I won't be as descriptive in this review as I was in my Dream Team one, I'm just going to share my thoughts on it, and I'll be comparing it to the Collector's Edition version I played on the Gamecube(Disregarding the constant game lock-ups obviously ):<)

  • at least until they find Skullkid and her brother. On the way, Link and Tatl find the Salesman who says he's been watching them and if Link can get his Ocarina back, he can become human again. The Salesman also says that they must get Majora's Mask back within 3 days when he travels again, which coincidentally, is also when Skullkid will drop a gigantic spherical rock on Termina with an angry...

  • face called "the moon" which will destroy everything. You can find this out at many points early in the game, but some of it you'll only know from listening to Grandma Anju's Storybook in the Stock Pot Inn if you get the All-night Mask. BTW, I'm sure the actual Moon is much bigger.

  • Most Noticeable Changes: I'm glad that you can save progress regularly now instead of getting one shot when you use am owl statue. I can understand people getting upset if they lose a bunch of progress now that the Song of Time doesn't save. It's not a flaw just something you have to get used to. Besides, the older versions explicitly said your progress was getting saved when getting used, and...

  • it is somewhat the player's fault if they don't recognize this. However the argument that Song of Time saves should've stayed does have some merit. The Boss Fights were wildly changed, mostly Gyorg and Twinmold. Odalwa and Goht have all the same attacks, they just get damaged differently. I like how you're no longer forced to take damage from Gyorg from the cutscene where he released his...

  • larvae at you, causing you to always be a set distance away from the center and changing the camera angle. That's just bad design imo. Twinmold I have mixed feelings about. Why does the first one's head explode when it's defeated, but not the second? Summoning a dozen larvae is annoying, especially when I end up L-targeting them just trying to change the camera angle. This is the one point in...

  • the game where I change the targeting method from Switch to Hold. Also, THE FREAKING BOMBER'S NOTEBOOK. Did they seriously have to make it so that almost every single event in the entire game is part of it? Often times it's redundant, mostly when progressing through the main story, and when it only appears after you've finished something and gotten a reward. In the original game, you didn't...

  • have to get it at all, which was nice for people playing through the game again and more. At least the Sheikah Stone doesn't have this problem. During the Goron race, I feel like Link's spiked roll negates more in the air, when he makes sharp turns and hits other Gorons for no apparent reason, as if it didn't need to be more luck-based already. I do like how there's additional credits from the...

  • Grezzo staff that helped Nintendo with this remake and OoT 3D as well, which I will most likely be doing next. The music as a whole I'll say was kind of underwhelming. When it comes to the Zelda series, it really depends on a particular game to see if I enjoy the soundtrack. There's a few songs I like, but it's not exactly Sonic, Bayonetta, Fates or Echoes levels of awesome for me.

  • I'd rate the 3DS version at 8/10. I recommend it to people that want to play it anywhere and want to see some newer changes. I get that building the game up again costs money, but I don't think it warrants a brand-new 3DS title price of $39.99. If you don't play on the go, have a 3DS and/or don't want to spend as much, the Wii or Wii U Virtual Console option is probably better.

  • TBH, I just wanted a version of the game that doesn't constantly freeze up like on the Gamecube, and I haven't been the most interested in VC, except for just recently, and I do plan on getting some games before Nintendo Network is shut down, so this was a good option for me. The portability was just a nice bonus. That concludes my second review. You can share your thoughts if you haven't yet.

  • I liked the Bombers notebook. It helped me thinking the way it vaguely hints at things. I would rather poiht out that the alarm system is flawed. You can only set one timer at a time. Besides that, I agree with your rating.

  • To the complaint about Goron Link's roll. Once the spikes are out you don't have to hold up anymore since he'll move forward automatically. Of course you can't make 90 degree angle turns but it still helps dramatically.

  • Also the Bombers Notebook is more in your face about it in the 3ds version while still exempting a couple of heart pieces that just stand in the over world or are in enemies. (And the ones on the moon). It was also only there b/c this was the game with the most sidequests which would get hard to keep track of and they needed a way to encourage sidequesting since a straight playthrough will only..

  • @TN Ethan I'm fine with using it to do sidequests for things like Heart Pieces and Masks, but when it's put in for things that are blatantly obvious like collecting all of the Zora eggs or winning minigames, and you're forced to use it, it gets annoying, especially for veteran players who've memorized everything, or people that do minimal collection runs.

  • @Daniel I must respectfully disagree with you about people getting to the moon with only 7 hearts, because except for the main dungeons, heart pieces are literally EVERYWHERE. Even if you don't explore, there's still a bunch you can find in the mandatory areas(Clock Town, Deku Palace, Mountain Village, Pirate's Fortress, Ikana Castle, etc.) You'd have to try to not notice any.

  • @E I know that, it's just the fact that I can get knocked into a wall or have the spiked roll cancelled from doing so, because even in this version, the rolling mechanics are as consistent as the light dash in Sonic games.
