Review #3: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

I won't be describing all of the game aspects, I'll just be saying what I like and dislike about them and give some examples.

  • I'm running low on posts, and I want to state what I think Hilda should've done trying to save Lorule, and some of my thoughts on the bosses, so I'll do that tomorrow, but you can share your thoughts on this review and/or the last 2 games I did if you check my posts, and I'll respond then.

  • Here's what Hilda could've done: helped Link assemble Hyrule's Triforce, pretend to be Yuga's accomplice so that she can secretly give information to Link and help him gain an advantage, which would result in his defeat and then Lorule's Triforce could still be restored. Of course Yuga would find out that Hilda was lying to him and turn her into a painting. I'd also want Ravio to play a bigger...

  • in the story than forcing you to pay for important items, and not making a single appearance in Lorule until the very end of the game, because saving your kingdom from being completely destroyed is more important than money. Either way, Hilda helping Link defeat Yuga, especially with the Triforce of Courage and Master Sword is still a MUCH better plan.

  • @Jake you can give me some details that are different from the 3DS titles without any story spoilers. But I do expect some differences like: the Magic Triangle, Weapon Durability, S and SS-Ranked weapons, no casual mode, no grinding, not-dragon final boss and more, but please correct me if necessary.

  • The last thing I'll say about the review is: I've watched a small bit of gameplay from ALttP, and some things seemed like they were just copy-pasted from there to here, most noteably the Centipede Boss. Yet another reason why I prefer the 3D titles: they seem much more ambitious, creative and unique, something I really am enjoying about Breath of the Wild.

  • I think I'll space out some of these reviews a bit more, so I'll start my next one probably tomorrow.

  • Gameplay: I find the swordplay with the Knights to be a bit awkward. In LTTP, since they could only face in 1 of 4 directions at a time, you could exploit their sprite limitations and stand in a position where you can easily hit them without worrying about their sword. Since this game use full 360º motion, they're always facing you, causing fights with them to take longer than they really should.

  • I'm also not a fan of item rentals. That completely defeats their purpose of making you feel limited in combat and exploration until you've beaten some dungeons and gotten those items. Now you can just rent them for what is honestly pocket change, and buying them isn't that hard either thanks to a certain Hinox. All the dungeon items are just stat buffs and Master Ore.

  • You can also upgrade them pretty easily since you aren't limited in where you can explore for the most part, making the Maimai (I think that's what they were called) sidequest easy and beatable once you've enter Lorule, not to mention that some of the Nice items are a bit overpowered.

  • Story: To Yuga's credit, he's in that club of villains that thought to kill off the Hero immediately before they caused trouble. That didn't work, but at least he tried. Other than that, he's kind of just a bootleg Ghirahim in terms of personality. I do like how he's opposite Ganondorf (not powerful at all disregarding his staff), but that goes for all the Lorule counterparts.

  • Honestly, aside from Lorule Death Mountain (Ice physics, and that place was a bit confusing), I liked the dungeons. I don't remember any stealth sections in the Dark Palace, which is a good thing since that probably means it wasn't that bad or that good. I honestly have no problem with stealth section in Zelda, even the Forsaken Fortress (hate the mice though).

  • I also like how this Thieves Hideout is like the LTTP one in the sense that the boss door is easy to get to, but you need to explore the rest of the dungeon, rescue someone, and take them to the boss's room (and kudos to Stalblind for using the Magic Bracelet in his boss fight).

  • And yes, the majority of this game is a recreation of LTTP. Hyrule is mostly the same, Lorule is very similar to Dark World, and even the bosses are similar (most of the Lorule bosses are alt versions of a Dark World boss). That honestly makes the game a bit boring in terms of exploration since you've seen most of this stuff in LTTP assuming you've played that game.

  • I'm also not a fan of the Streetpass battles since they can give you way too much money, making buying items even easier, and are tied to Streetpass, meaning you won't be doing a lot if you don't live near people who play the game. This also makes getting the achievements hard, which makes unlocking the secret boss hard too.

  • Thanks for reading this review. My next one is going to be on Fire Emblem Fates, and this time I'm going to do something a little different, so I'll see you there. Also, if you find the most recent troll there, report his comments. @Denzel[CN] I'll respond to your comments here on my next discussion after the review is finished.
