  • Imagine a picturesque day in the middle of a midwestern summer. There wasn't a cloud in sight. I would have never guessed that I would be trying to wait out a tornado in a hut six hours later. My cousin and I were headed to an amusement park for a day of fun. About halfway through the day we have to leave a line we were in (for ages) because all the rides were closed due to lighting. • It was then that our party noticed the massive shift in weather. It was freezing, it was as dark as night, and the wind was picking up. Every available shelter was crowded with people expecting rain. Suddenly buckets full just start pouring down. We couldn't find shelter ANYWHERE. We were wading through the streets, thighs deep in some places, when we heard tornado sirens start blaring.

  • Of course my cousin starts panicking. Me being the survivor of too many situations like these, I kept my calm and found a grass hutch out of the water we could hide in for the time being. So there we sat for a good half hour while sirens blared and winds ripped grass of the roof of our meager hut. When the rain stopped and the sun started to poke out, we made our way back out of the flooded (cont)

  • amusement park. The reason I'm sharing is because about a month ago the roads were washed out by the river and the sewers were pouring out flood water and the lake was so high our piers were disappearing. We have a massive storm headed straight for us. Irma won't be tropical by the time it meets us, and hearts out to those meeting it head on, but this storm is effecting tons of communities.

  • We're all going to have to face this together, be it the people losing their homes, the people effected by the massive shortages and spike in prices to accommodate, or the towns up here who just repaired the damages from the massive flood, and who can't afford more heavy rainfall. Or the people like me, waiting out storms in stupid places and kayaking through floodwaters. Good luck everyone.
