Offense or Defense?

In a 1v1 battle between a Pokemon with extremely high attack vs one with extremely high defense which would you take? 'da rules 1: The HP for the offensive Pokemon is 350, have a 600 attack/special attack stat. the other Pokemon has a 600 defense/special defense, HP of 650, they're both Lv100 2: Offensive one's faster by a speed of 500 3: They can have ANY ability

  • I would choose defense. If you find a good move set to poison stall them that can help alot. There are many ways the defense could win.

  • Offencive easily. Usually in the perspective of a defencive Pokémon, even offencive threats appear bulky due to your poor offencive stats. However offencive hard hitters with four attacks of varying coverage and hitting on different sides of the spectrum is far more valuable.

  • Sometimes the offencive threat doesn't even need much coverage if the raw power is that strong, like Mega Medicham's High Jump Kick can practically one or two shot everything that's been offered so far defencively bar Mega Sableye. Given perfect coverage and Speed advantage though (which they could detract from to gain HP EVs and still outspeed usually), there's no contest.

  • Considering that you could pick any 4 move set, ability, and have any type or types in this hypothetical battle, It would be fun to see a actual battle under these conditions. One thing that could help(?) if you were to actually prepare for this battle is you know what some of the stats were be under rule #1 and for some reason I didn't think to have the other stats in rule #1 so i'll modify it

  • New rule #1 Complete stats for the offensive strong Pokemon Hp: 350 Attack/special attack: 600 Defense/special defense: 150 Speed: 550 for the defensive strong Pokemon Hp: 650 Attack/special attack: 150 Defense/special defense: 600 Speed: 50 and a additional 7th rule #7: Evs, Ivs, and natures would have no effect on the stats

  • Well that's just… different. The bulky Pokémon's way out of scale compared to what we've seen so far. It's like 1.5x bulkier than Chansey, but without the reduced Defense, it's Defense is as good as its Special Defense here, plus it can have a better defencive Ability like Prism Armor or Fur Coat.

  • That aside, the offencive Pokémon still has the upper hand in my opinion. Mixed offencive Stats and Attacks, paired with a good Ability which often compliments offences far more than defences, a Setup Move, and a Z-move, and any defencive threat can be eliminated.

  • That's if both players know eachothers sets and build sets to counter them, the offencive one will always finish off the other first. If it's an "against the world" idea, then certain defencive combinations will no doubt destroy anything bar snipers with that bulk.

  • It'll be "you against the world" here: the only thing you'll know about the opposing Pokemon would be their stats, so if you go with the high offensive stats & speed you'll face a Pokemon with the high defensive stats & HP and vice versa. As for what the opposing Pokemon would actually be like beyond that, other than making any educational guesses you wouldn't know till you start battling
