I really dislike when people are constantly disrespecting/making fun of themselves as a form of comedy. We all have flaws, and while it's okay to laugh at yourself,(in fact, it's great that people can at themselves) you should also have a certain level of respect for yourself.

    Well, some people may do it for the sake of comedy, but I believe that most of us just say it because we know it's true, and we're happy about that. I think it's more healthy to accept what you are then to try and deny it and live like somebody else. Because in the end, we're all different and special in our own way, and knowing who and what we are is one of the many ways of living happily.

    Joking about my depression is one way I cope, it's not gonna go away so I try to make light of my situation just so others don't feel bad for me. I dislike when people go too far with their "jokes" about their lives or illnesses, where it is far from funny, that's when I tell them they need some help. People need at least SOME self respect to get by, its something my therapist taught me.

    @Nacho I was more so talking how people will treat literally everything about themselves as a flaw and try make it a joke. I didn't even know people made fun of their own lives or illnesses. That's even more unacceptable. Just because the problem is their own and not someone else's, that still doesn't make it okay to joke about.

    @Genis I don't think so, at least not 9 times out of 10. When most ppl here have problems they do their best to make sure everyone knows for the sake of attention and pity. One of the reasons I believe people make fun of themselves is so others are less likely to.

    I have an inferiority complex myself, but I try not to make it known. It's certainly not something to joke about. The way in which everyone seems to view themselves or others around them is heavily dependent on what they experienced in their life, I think. When I was younger, I was very short and scrawny all the way up until around my freshman year, and I hated that. Now I've grown to 6'0" but ...

    ... still pretty skinny, yet I still hold that hate for myself to this day. I feel like parts of that weak side of me remained, and it's like I've only locked it away. ...But, I try not to let any of that get me down, and I've had someone who's helped me with it a lot in recent years, so that's a big self-confidence boost for me lately.
