    Try holding A, B, Start, and Select. I'm not sure if this works on the gamepad, but it works on other controllers. If that doesn't work, restart the console and make sure you're not touching the joystick.

    If an object isn't pushing it up, look if there's any damage on the joy-stick or around it. If not, try calling Nintendo or see the support site.
