Allow me to be blunt: I think that Majora’s Mask’s is objectively unrivaled as the best Zelda…

  • …story. -Technical- Technically, Majora’s Mask 3D is very similar to Ocarina of Time 3D. The remake’s visuals generally improve upon those from the Nintendo 64 original in all regards, the 3D effect is adequately implemented, and the frame rate has been increased from 20fps to 30fps. I find Majora’s Mask 3D’s art direction noteworthy due to the fact that, in comparison…

  • …to other Zelda titles, it’s not particularly vibrant. While this sounds like a detractory element of the game’s design, it’s actually quite fitting. That the world of Termina appears very somber only complements the grim nature of Majora’s Mask 3D that other aspects of its design suggest. Glitches never disrupted my time playing, and the game’s frame rate was adequately…

  • …stable. -Conclusion- The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, simply put, is an incredibly well-designed video game, but I think the synergy shared by its various assets is its most impressive accomplishment. Almost every facet of the title’s design subtly complements its core experience. Completing sidequests for gameplay reasons also leaves you with a greater…

The result of all of this is an incredibly well-developed world, some of the most memorable moments in the Zelda franchise, and believable portrayals of how humans react to distressing situations, be them commonplace problems or…

It’s an incredible departure from the franchise’s typical design choices, so much so that it often feels like a Zelda title mixed with something undefinable and incongruous, but that’s precisely why I consider it to be the best video game I’ve ever played.

  • Not Recommended If: - You find completing timed events in video games to be frustrating rather than rewarding. - You find narrative to be a largely unnecessary component of the Zelda experience compared to its gameplay. - The various concepts that Majora’s Mask 3D experiments with sound like too much of a departure from the Zelda franchise’s essence to appeal to you.

  • I'm one of those people who hates being timed, so even though I objectively think it's a great game, I don't play Majora's Mask much. But the real reason I commented is to compliment your description of the general Zelda formula. This evening I happened to be trying to explain to a non-gamer friend what set the classic Zeldas apart from BOTW for me, and I read that to her to help outline my point.

  • Why no perfect 10? I know that number is an ideal that cannot be achieved, but if the story and gameplay are both 10 then it probably deserves it.

  • Should I get the 3DS version, or the WiiU VC? I would prefer WiiU, but if it's that good....

  • Did you say it was the best game you have ever played? That's a mighty fine statement!

  • @Noah: Basically for the exact reasons you described. I did consider approaching this review with the mindset of "If Majora's Mask doesn't deserve a 10/10, no game I review ever will, and I need to give at least one title a perfect score at some point in order to illustrate what I consider worthy of that accomplishment", but, in the end, I decided against doing so.

  • @Joe S. ♪: I would suggest the Wii U version. I consider the original and the remake to be essentially equal in quality for various reasons, so you're probably best off playing whichever one interests you more. And yes, regarding your second statement. Though the irony of that is Majora's Mask has never been my personal favorite game of all-time. Subjectivity is amusing indeed.

  • Johnny--man, am I glad I never had you as a professor. Joe--since the VC version is cheaper, maybe you could get that one and then get the 3D version if you really like it. There are some pretty big differences, but for the most part they're still the same game.

  • @Danny: Same, though that's probably obvious by now, even if I was attempting to be as objective as possible. The only Zelda games that are in the same tier as Majora's Mask for me personally are A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, and Ocarina of Time. Zelda II is close behind those four, I suppose. I honestly really like that game.
