My brother erased my whole entire Hard drive that I had plugged in to my Wii U

It had 600 gigabytes of data on it. A bunch of Wii U games and save data. My Breath of Wild data which had 100 plus hours of playtime and I had 100 plus more shrines on it. I was only a couple shrines off from doing all of them. My smash 4 data which 1000 plus hours on it, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 and so much more.

  • So did he unplug it and deleted the data to use the hard drive for something else? Why didn't he ask before deleting stuff on it? Was the hard drive given to you to use for your Wii U?

  • Yeah he just did it randomly. He took it when I was asleap.

  • As long as the drive was not reformatted or new data written to it you may be able to retrieve your save data. Deleting files on a drive only marks them as free space. It is only trully erased when something else is written in the "free space".

  • I did just formatted it again with the Wii U if that counts for anything.

  • This is why they need save data on the cloud, or go back to memory cards like the Gamecube, or even SD cards like the Wii. You just copy or update the data regularly on two different memory/SD cards, one for playing on, and one as the "Master memory card" that you could keep locked up in a safe. That would help things a lot in this day and age(or any).

  • There's no excuse for it. Especially now on the Switch that will have paid online services and multiplayer. (Not saying that's the case for you, as you play on the Wii U.) But yeah, we need backups for our save data.

  • Once reformatted the disk is completely erased, so no.
