Debunking MatPat's "How fast is Sonic?" "theory"

Sonic's trademark speed is BASED on Super Mario Bros. World 1-1, also showing Mario beating this level with a warp pipe is clearly cheating in this case, plus, the loops and tunnels got in Sonic's way in Sonic 1 Green Hill Zone and lose Sonic's time below 25 seconds. DEBUNKED, MatPat!

  • Sonics true speed is unknown And the reason he doesn't go Exceeding sound speeds is probably cause he will run right into a wall and SPLAT! he dies since he goes so fast the G-force and impact would kill him (im not some science guy so this probably makes no sense)

  • @sam I don't think he stays in the past. He lowers his speed when at a zone or Robotnik's base to not cause a sonic boom to make the ones he protect, and doesn't want Robotnik's base to be collapsing on him. @Kirito That theory is actually a hypothesis.

  • Hasn't this already been debunked?

  • @Shadow In Sonic Unleashed, after going through the checkpoint, his speed is usually 750 miles per hour, but his speed can be increased. Also, Sonic can't even die from the G-force nor splatting into a wall because in the origin, Sonic exceeds the speed of sound to cause a sonic boom and turninh his fur from brown to blue, and also Sonic has fast reflexes.

  • @☆★RedSplat It's already debunked, but some people still believed in that "theory".

  • Actually, the opening of Sonic heroes alone debunks Matpat's horrible theory.

and the sad part is that people take a theory as a fact without thinking it through... sigh

either way, sonic can go WAY faster than the speed of sound, but chooses not to to protect himself and everything else

  • Sonic is canonically faster than light, but there’s still a lot of things for SEGA to do to prove that.

  • Who would actually take this theory serious In game stuff doesnt count Cuz in case you havent noticed sonic never runs faster than sound when youre playing Only in cutscenes he does Therefore the whole theory which was trying to use in game stuff is completely s..d

  • The only thing Sonic isn't faster in gameplay is because Yuji Naka got motion sickness when testing before the final concept.

  • @Alex that is a good reason. Some people who have issues with fast motion may most likely get vertigo from watching high speeds like that.

  • Which is a reason why Sonic has yet to be faster than light. If you were to see Sonic at his casual speed, which is 765 m/s (in which ScrewAttack has mistaken as 765 mph since they said his casual is 2 x the speed of sound (2 x 767.269), it would be bad for those who have motion problems.

  • No the reason is that the game would be unplayable if he moved st his real speed

I've watched the sonic 1 beta, and apparently, they originally had it where sonic could his speed to go into the special stage, and the special stages themeselves are dimensions.

but they reduce sonic's speed in the final product because the sonic was going in the beta does give people motion sickness.
