    that's the element called dragon. affinity is when your attack does extra damage. so if your weapon has 50% affinity, 50% of your attacks will do extra damage. affinity looks like a red streak when you attack. [not to be confused with the yellow streaks]

    To be more specific, affinity is comparable to crit chance in other games, and when it does proc that attack will deal 25% more damage. That element is dragon as stated above, which doesn't do anything against monsters except to do more damage, especially if they are weak to whatever element you are using.

    different monsters are stronger or weaker to different elements. check the monster's armor if you want to see what element it's weak to. this armor, for example, {silver rathalos armor} has 20 dragon resistence, so a silver rathalos would be strong against dragon.

    Another thing to note, notice the "light orange" and the Red numbers in Spyro's screenshot of the armor stats? In addition to taking less damage from that element, if you have enough resistance to that element, That element's "blight" would either be reduced or negated. Blights such as burns, dragon blight, or freeze. (dragon blight negates your weapons element/ailment. Carry nulberries.)
