    Learn how everything works, and try hard to use them the good way. For example, you can use Fox's reflector (Down Special) to reflect Mario's Fireballs (Neutral Special). But don't use it too much or you will get punched. The key is to use the moves in the right time and space.

    Tilts. A LOT of new players don't use them and they are very useful and important. Learn them and use them.

    Try not to do the same thing too often. The moment your opponent figures out habits you use all the time, you might as well throw the game cause you already lost (Don't really SD midgame though, that's not nice). Be unexpected.

    shields and grabs are very important things to learn if you haven't yet smash attacks aren't always optimal, it's often better to use tilts or aerials because they're usually safer to throw out and often can combo into other attacks practice all your character's moves (especially throws) on cpus and see what kinds of followups you can get if any

    Tilts and spacing are really the two things you'll want to learn to get better as a whole. After that, decide on a 'main' (a character you like using/do really well with) and dedicate some time to learning which moves serve what purpose.

    Move:Pivot Tilt start running then flick control stick backwards (HOLD CONTROL STICK) then press A to do a tilt you should slide a bit

    Are you using Shulk's Monado Arts (Neutral Special)? I have seen many Shulk players that never uses it. I know it makes you vulnerable, but it's good to change modes depending on the situation. For example, you can change it to Jump mode to jump out from holes easier. Change it to Speed if you would like to hit and run, or Shield if your opponent doesn't know how to Grab.

    @Marco: Being Unexpected/Unpredicable "all the time" is also predicable. Try to make a main strategy, then make secondary strategies if the main one isn't working well. Alternate between these ideas to be "unexpected", in a expected way. For example, while using Mario, the main focus is to "spam fireballs when far" and "attack opponent". One secondary could be "Reflect with Super Cape".
