Do you have any concerns about the direction the Zelda series may be heading? Future titles will likely be open-world like Breath of the Wild, according to Aonuma.

  • Many see it as being way too linear.

    Yeahs3
  • And..?

    Yeahs0
  • I don't view linearity as something that affects a game's quality (or for that matter, a valid complaint); nearly all Zeldas are incredibly linear. To me, only three qualify to be called otherwise, and they are not better than the others simply because they're non-linear.

    Yeahs3
  • Speaking of non-linearity, I believe it's why Breath of the Wild's story is so weak; Link can do whatever whenever (if ever) he desires. All story elements/cutscenes are generic, in that Link's progress doesn't affect the story in any way. Would it have been a bad idea for the plot to progress (GASP) as...

  • Link did the Divine Beasts? Maybe have an event occur once a Divine Beast is cleared? Like how Link chased King Bulblin around between the Forest Temple and Goron Mines- maybe something like this can happen after your first Divine Beast (which one doesn't matter) so that way both a story and non-linearity can be retained.

  • Again, Horizon Zero Dawn destroys BotW in the story departent. Gamepay? Not even close to as good, but it's a story worthy of players who can cook their own meals ... irl. @Caleb: Sales don't amount to evidence of quality. Please.

  • @Elzonire, sorry I couldn't respond. I ran out of posts. I'm not sure you read my previous comment. I knoe gameplay is king. Its king because Zelda wouldn't be a game without GAME-play. I said this. As for OoT being my favorite, I know that there is better Gameplay. (MM, BotW, TP etc.) But OoT has the best story out of all the ones I've played imo. Twilight Princess rivalals it with MM imo. But--

    Yeahs1
  • --its the fact that OoT has, (at the VERY least that maintains validity imo), one of the best/better stories of the franchise. And that, with its gameplay, that I find it my favorite. Its gameplay is simple, yet attractive imo, allowing you to get fully immersed into the story and sidequests if you so wish. Heck, I love stories and writing so much, I want to become an author someday. Cuz of that,

    Yeahs1
  • --I guess I love and simply adore story driven games. (Only reason TP is not my fav is probably becuz of its PAINFUL linearity, though I can adapt. Its why I want SS this summer.) @Erumbitaro, Sry, just noticed your post directed at me. Yes, I have played BotW. Where was the good sidequests, enemy variety, and the green tunic? And no, not the cap of the wild combo. The real thing, besides ammibo--

    Yeahs1
  • --you have to buy. Really. See my previous posts as to why no consitency of story is bad. I'm not gonna say the whole thing again. its too huge, lol.

    Yeahs1
  • @Elzonire: People complained that the game didn't do anything new and that it focused too much on the story. That's why Aonuma put so much emphasis on "breaking series' traditions" and gameplay in BotW @Stagger: Am I wrong in this case? SS got mixed reception at launch and didn't sell as well as other Zelda titles. BotW got universal acclaim at launch and has over 5 million sales seven months in.

    Yeahs2
  • I am fine with an open world, it's just the story needs to be better like OoT's story. I know, I am one of those people that like OoT and MM more than most of the Zelda games...

    Yeahs2
  • And one more thing I forgot to say... future Zelda games NEED more Dungeons and Temples!

    Yeahs3
  • @Caleb, Huh. Well in that case, at least they TRIED(triying?) to make it better through DLC. Aonuma was smart then. He was going all out, not taking any chances. Smart.

    Yeahs1
  • It's an opinion Caleb, so I can't tell you that you're wrong. I can address you being both misinformed and misguided. Critically, SS was more well received than any title since OoT. This mixed reception was a bunch of motion control protesters and nonlinearity superiority rubes. Similarly, BotW detractors like myself aren't sold on the value in my time offered by a vast, mainly empty of measurable

    Yeahs1
  • accomplishment, open world. I'll take The Wind Waker's overworld over BotW's any day. There were meaningful permanent inventory items to be found. I'd wager I'm the only person here who has been playing LoZ since 1987 AND retired off a professional writing income. It's hard for me to imagine being swayed from viewing BotW as anything more than subpar, but my priorities in entertainment differ.

    Yeahs1
  • @Stagger: That's fine if you don't like it. Opinions differ for everyone. One journalist may give BotW a very good review while another could give it a very low review. Ultimately, neither matter. A game's success is not measured by one person's opinions. Instead, the feedback from all people must be taken into consideration. If the feedback is nearly unanimously good, the game is truly a success.

    Yeahs1
  • The feedback is not remotely unanimously good. In fact, as a young retiree, I work at GameStop part-time to get out of the house a bit. I've spoken w/ literally hundreds of BotW players. Among longtime LoZ fans, the response is very mixed, much like my own. Neophytes to the series, on the other hand, are more often than not quite happy w/ BotW. Your disparagement of SS comes from very flawed

    Yeahs1
  • reasoning Caleb. You're trying to compare interest and sales for the last gasp of the Wii to the Switch's launch title. Check Metacritic in five years. SS will outscore BotW handily. Gameplay may be paramount in the moment, but it is a fleeting enjoyment. Characters and story are what players remember as time passes.

    Yeahs2
  • I just want it on the record that I think BotW is a spectacular game. There have been four or five other instant all-time classics in the genres I enjoy this year, and it's still the best I've played in 2017. I just think it scrapped far too much of what makes LoZ unique and sodcial just to prove it could out-sandbox everyone else. Thus, as Justin originally asked, I'm concerned for its direction.
