I came across a theory online that the reason that Hyrule is so inconsistent between games is because this is the LEGEND of Zelda. As in, they're stories that we're playing through. It could be that these are supposed to be stories told about an old mythical place called Hyrule, with Princess Zelda, the evil Ganon, and the hero Link fighting throughout time. Since these are stories,

  • the facts aren't always straight, and don't always match up from one story to another, so that's why places like Hyrule Castle, the Lost Woods, and Death Mountain move all over the place frome game to another. I really wonder if this is the basic idea Nintendo is going with.

  • I've heard it before. I don't think so, that would mess up Nintendo's timeline, making a contradiction from what they're doing.

  • Like Greek Mythology had different versions of the same stories because different regions had their own "take" on them...makes sense.

  • Well it would sure explain all these places shifting around constantly.

I've always seen each Zelda game except for direct sequels as a reimagining of the same basic story (legend) in all the Zelda games.

  • My mom always though Zelda had a Bible-y feel to it. Obviously it's not, but the map of Hyrule looked like it to her xD. Zelda isn't evil. Watch the Zelda theorys, the game isn't evil. Or mocking religion. It's not. It's a fun game. *Cough coug* people think Pokémon are evil *Cough cough.* It's not. *Cough cough.*

  • I mean, it makes sense. I’ve thought of this too, that each of these stories could be a story passed down through generations in some fictional world. I think it explains major differences pretty well and simply.

  • I don't think it necessarily contradicts the official timeline. For example, on one timeline there could be the story of the Hero of Time then there's a later story about the Twilight Princess, only in this story, the Temple of Time is located in the Lost Woods, which instead is now in the south west instead of the south east. Certain elements are inconsistent because these are stories

  • being told by people unfamiliar with the actual place. So each timeline could still work. I'm not saying that some of these games are retellings of the same story, since they're all completely dfferent, just that they're arious stories, and not all of the facts are straight.

  • Oh, I see. When people say it's all the same story told over and over again, it's obviously not. You're right; that could work.
