Well in the original Japanese version of A Link to the Past it was renowned not for repelling evil, but for it's ability to repel and cut through magic. It's since been given tons of magical abilities ranging from shooting beams out of it to locating objects (dowsing) to sealing and dissolving evil within it (Demise). It's a holy blade that evil can't touch and can only be wielded by the Hero.

I'm not saying there aren't other fictional swords with similar holy properties, but the Master Sword is one of the earliest and most well known video game examples of it and it's only been given more and more abilities as the series progressed. As for the actual backstory of the blade, play Skyward Sword for specifics.
