My solving tutorials

Last year I made a series of posts that walk through various puzzles step-by-step, while teaching the techniques needed to solve them. (Dates of those posts are in the 1st comment.) Before they're lost to time, I just wanted to point them out once more! Perhaps in the future I'll post them on the web somewhere. Maybe to a site that has FAQs for Games? Who knows!

  • Would you happen to know which of these puzzles contains the last mural tile for Primal Groudon? -Manectric puzzle (Luxray required for tile, don't have Luxray) Aggron puzzle (use of Slow Time only to get mural tile)

  • Never mind! I thought you meant a different tile but I just saw your other post. It's this guy.

  • Do you have tips on how to do Mega Picross? I am almost finishing The Legend's of Zelda: Twilight Princess Picross, from my Nintendo, but I still have trouble with the Mega picross puzzles...

  • Well, I never got around to writing a tutorial for Mega Picross ("Alt-World" in Pokémon Picross), but sure, I could post a few tips. I'm assuming you know how the rules work? Or should I start with that?

Okay well, I had to take some time to find puzzles which demonstrate the tricks well, but I think I got some. 1st important thing: Although it's part of the rules, always keep in mind, a "Mega Number" MUST touch both sides of a Mega Line, while a regular number on a Mega Line must only touch 1 side. So if you get any fills on a Mega Line, see if you can determine whether they belong to a regular…

…or Mega number. Anyway, here's a picture of a puzzle that I've started out in the normal manner; finding squares that must be filled, due to lines having large and/or many numbers. Where we'll look next is the 10th/11th mega row.

First of all, there are 2 pairs of fills near the left end. These both belong to a mega number(s) since they span both rows. If I put a fill in between them, as shown, they'd create a mega piece of at least 5. That's larger than any number on this row, so it can't happen. These pieces must be separated.

Okay, separated! You can see the mega piece on the right, as well as the fills on the far right of this row, belong to [2]s, so they can be enclosed. The one on the left belongs to the [3]… but there's also a regular 1 to its left, on the upper row. There's only one place it can fit: in the square where the cursor is in this picture!

Now we've got a fill on the far-left column, and thanks to the X below it and to its right, we can also see where the final fill of that [3] goes. But look, the 1st/2nd column is also a mega column! And look closer at its numbers. There's only 1 mega number, a [4], and all the regular numbers are on the right-hand side (2nd column). This fill is on the left.

Since the fill on the left belongs to the mega [4], it must be extended… and the only way we know for certain it must go is upward. This also means the fill on the right is one of the two 1's below it, so it can be enclosed. Now, just how far upward COULD that [4] extend?

A: You have 2 of the 4 fills, but it can only extend 1 more fill upward. That's because it's a Mega number, so at least 1 of its fills goes in the other column. The squares I filled in this pic are just examples; it could go in any two of the 3 squares shown (the 3rd being where the cursor is). And since the remaining regular numbers are all on the right, you can X the rest of the left column!

So, what you see here is what we can figure out, SO FAR, about those two Mega lines we looked at. The new X's help us figure out a bunch of other spots though! I realize I'm teaching by demonstration and it's probably not too helpful for situations in other puzzles. So, next, I'll just show you a bunch of Tricks to use.

Hey, I have a discussion open here on the Pokemon Picross Community. Does anyone know what in the world Blue Force does? Please explain in detail if you have the time.

Blue Force is a hint system! If there are any lines where it's possible to figure out any squares (either they must be filled, or must not be filled) by deduction, the numbers will turn blue for those lines.
