There is always lag online. It can happen in any time, and it comes in even the smallest of frames.

There's other reasons why Online Smash is Fake Smash. For Glory Doubles is bad due to lack of competitive rules. All Stages are restricted in For Glory except Omega Stages. Salty Smashers, the Report System, and some Smashers have a tendency to leave after one or two matches, which prevents others from gaining match up knowledge. Custom Characters and Mii Fighters are restricted in For Glory.
