And so another nail is struck into the coffin of the Boy Scouts. Guess it's more of a blessing that my time ends next year.

  • Girls allowed in the Boy Scouts. Hmm. I don't quite understand why the two were ever separated.

  • Elzonire- Can you please explain how allowing girls into the Boy Scouts is destructive?

    Yeahs0
  • I mean, the choice is bizarre, no doubt. But I feel as though the two organizations should merge, rather than just have one include both sexes/genders.

    Yeahs0
  • Because they're kinda meant to help children understand and enjoy the difference between girls and boys? Why do they NEED to be united to be considered equal?

  • Sorry about the late response! As soon as I set foot on Death Mountain, I basically paid minimal attention to Miiverse, didn't see this.

  • Anyway Aaron, what Ursa said is partway it. Don't get me wrong, I have ZERO problem with girls taking part in activities like this. If they're interested in that, more power to them. What I don't think is right is that first of all, the BSA wasn't founded with this in mind. It's original purpose was 1. To start to prepare rowdy boys for the military. 2. To turn those rowdy boys into independent,

  • Competent, functioning, and responsible adults. While for the moment the first objective isn't so prevalent (though it ahould not be discarded), the second one is still very much in play. The organization was made with the needs of boys in mind. If it were founded with the intent of hosting both boys and girl, that would be fine. Everything would have been planned out and by this point, most of

  • The wrinkles would be ironed out by now. However, that isn't what happened. As a result, instead of this being accepted everywhere, it will create dissent in many places because they turned their back (and have been doing so for the past few years) on their purpose, and their name. So the question comes, why can't the boys just suck it up and let the girl in? First, we live in a country that

  • Allows us to make our own clubs and organization with set requirements on who can join. Creates common ground for those involved in each respetive organization. So, if these types of people can make their own club and enforce the rules that people who do not qualify cannot join, why can't the BSA enforce theirs? A club for boys, that get to go out and do boy things. No one said girls can't make an

  • Organization like that, and they did, the GSA. Secondly, there is no problem with making fron the ground up an organization like the BSA for both boys and girls. So why didn't they? Why did they have to tell the BSA to stop disallowing girls when they could have just made their own specific organization? Heck, the BSA even has an offshoot program that in many ways is more adventurous than the

  • Main program, venturing. Both boys and girls. That's fine. Either of the two options I mentioned is completely reasonable. But telling the organization to stop doing the thing it was built to do because... why not cause mayhem? Look, scouts has been going downhill for a good few years now. Even without this and the other controversy, it's still pretty obvious that the organization will collapse

    Yeahs2
  • Under it's own weight. This will just expedite the downfall, I'm afraid.

  • Has the BSA had a pattern lately of causing controversy where it could be avoided while still fulfilling whatever goal was being pursued?

    Yeahs0

  • Not really. I've done a fair bit of reading online amd talked to some scouts in my troop. As far as I can tell, not many are fans of thid idea. What I find odd is that the BSA with the OTHER controversy, fought it until the supreme court, won, and then acquiesced because they didn't want to lose corporate sponsorship. AKA, no high adventure. Honestly, they're fun, but not actually important to

    Yeahs1
  • Scouting at all.

    Yeahs0
  • We do live in a country which allows different clubs to be made, yes. But when you have two clubs, one just for boys and one just for girls, the separation is bound to dissipate; the girls want to do what the boys are doing and the boys want to do what the girls are doing (this is of course, not taking into account the whole "gender-identity" dilemma which is far too complicated to discuss)

    Yeahs0
  • So, what can be done to accommodate their wants? Incorporate practices from club to the other, or blur the gende-based separation of them? I was never a Boy Scout. The club does not mean as much to me as it would a member. With that said, I don't fully know how this controversy "feels". From an outside perspective, I see the situation as this: Girls are allowed into the Boy Scouts. Good for them.

    Yeahs0
  • That last bit wasn't meant to be rude or condescending, in case it sounded so.

    Yeahs0
  • How long will it be until boys are allowed in the Girls Scouts? What would then be the point of having the Girl and Boys Scouts, when the defining difference (I know the clubs are quite different, by "defining difference," I refer the the "Girl/Boy" in the title) is gone? At that point, how long will it be until the clubs collapse into each other? Perhaps a merge will happen- on its own.
