I don't qualify the shrines in Breath of the Wild as "Dungeons". While the puzzles were fun to do, it's hard to compare them as to dungeons when they just go away very fast. Not even the Divine Beasts as they were just the shrines but just sightly bigger.

Shrines to me were just overworld puzzles, nothing more/less. I mean come on, those puzzles appear in Zelda all the time: Dampe's treasure (MM), Master Sword puzzle (TP), opening new paths (SS), etc. So the Shrines hardly justify replacing dungeons. They should've incorporated them better, or to extend the Divine Beast.

Part of what makes a dungeon is that you explore something that is part of Hyrule (Well Termina, Holodrum, Labrynna whatever) and what makes them excited is that they are fun to explore and you never see what enemy or what puzzle lurks around the next corner and you get the item inside to defeat the boss at the end. Plain and simple.

One thing I love most of a dungeon in the zelda series is how something was there and it turned into a backstory like The Royal Crypt in The Minish Cap, The Ancient Cistern in Skyward Sword, The Arbiter's Grounds in Twilight Princess, the Shadow Temple in Ocarina of Time, etc etc.
