    Super Paper Mario is arguably one of the darkest Mario games, even though it has a pretty cutesy art style. So not gritty, but pretty dark. (Especially the lore.)

    i've played spm somewhat and it just... doesn't do it. everyone says how dark it is and everything, but i just found it to be a normal paper mario game (pre-sticker star era games anyway)

    It's the lore, mainly. The game's backstory is pretty much just "Dead people were being put into Pixl bodies, also everyone's insane or dead." It isn't gritty, just kinda weird, what with most of the implications. Certainly for a Mario game, at least.
