Basically Sonic Mania Sonic got transported there at the end of the game. And now he’s going to help defeat Infinite who is powered with the Phantom Ruby, the powerful gem used in Sonic Mania for evil.

In the Sonic Mania, there's a powerful gem called the Phantom Ruby, which causes trouble, and in the best ending, a portal opens up and drags both Sonic and the Ruby go into it, taking them both to another dimension. (Modern Sonic's dimension.) And I guess that Modern Eggman found the Ruby in Forces, so Classic Sonic is probably trying to get the Ruby back to return to his dimension.

And Classic Sonic is probably helping the Resistance because he feels responsible for Modern Eggman's rise to power thanks to the Ruby. (It's also possible that Eggman created Infinite with the Ruby, but I'm just guessing.)
