Why is my Switch constantly on one bar of signal and my 3DS and Wii U, from the same area, reach full bars?

  • You'd think it would be the opposite.

  • My Switch does that also. It might be the same connection, just the Switch's is more sensitive/precise.

  • From my experience, the Switch's diminished signal range might be caused by Nintendo opting for a weaker Wi-Fi chip. What's even more bizarre is its wireless range being significantly reduced while searching for access points. You'd really have to be pretty close to a Wi-Fi router in order for Switch to pick it up, before you can move a bit further away.

  • Okay, but why are they opting for a weaker wi-fi chip? My modem and my Switch docks aren't in the same room, and I can't exactly have them in the same room.

  • After doing some more research, it turns out that there are many reports telling that Switch's 5GHz Wi-Fi chip has a stronger signal and faster Internet capabilities than the pitiful 2.4GHz one. If you were using 2.4GHz, it's worth checking if your access point actually support 5GHz and configure it accordingly. As far as my wireless router goes, it only features the former.
