A faster and more efficient way to gain levels is by sightseeing. Literally. The game awards you loads of free EXP simply for discovering landmarks and scenic viewpoints. Lin gained a level when I found this one. Scenic viewpoints are also an important source of revenue, so use the touchscreen map to find which FN sites have them.
