  It may not look like much today, but back in 1992, watching Kirby float home with King Dedede's castle against the backdrop of mountains and the setting sun--with the credits music playing--was pretty epic for the time. And yes, that's Masahiro Sakurai's name on the screen. This game was the first one he directed, and was kind of his first big breakout hit. He continued to work on new Kirby...

  ...games for years afterwards, eventually taking on the role of voice actor (for King Dedede), as well. These days, of course, Sakurai is probably best known for his work on the Super Smash Bros. games and Kid Icarus: Uprising. But it's safe to say that he's left an indelible mark on the Kirby series, while Kirby himself has more than earned a place in Nintendo's legendary lineup of heroes.

  Anyway, as the ending wraps up, Kirby releases the Sparkling Stars (which catch the castle and keep in suspended in midair) and falls to the ground below.

  He lands on a box, and is given a hero's welcome by a crowd of cheering Dream Land citizens as their recovered food rains down around them from a hole in the floor of the castle (still floating up above and offscreen). After a few seconds, Kirby holds up a sign that says "bye-bye," indicating the game is over.

  And that just about wraps things up. But there's one final screen at the very end of Kirby's Dream Land, where--while the defeated King Dedede is throwing a tantrum--you can read instructions on how to access a new, more challenging "Extra Game." Honestly, I've never been able to make this work, even on the original Game Boy (shown in the picture).

  In any case, that concludes my celebration of Kirby's Dream Land--a fun little game that started one of Nintendo's biggest series and helped launch Masahiro Sakurai's career to new heights. Happy 25th, Kirby. But now that that's all said and done, there's one more game whose anniversary I'd like to (belatedly) commemorate before saying goodbye to Miiverse...
