As much as I like Bowser's Inside Story, it probably has the blandest overworld in the series, which was likely because it had to compensate for Bowser's lack of mobility compared to Mario & Luigi.

I've been waiting for someone to point this out. Most of the overworld is just grassy fields and caves. The only unique areas outside of Peach's Castle are the beach and the forest, and even then they aren't particularly interesting.

Yes. Like Caleb said, a majority of areas were open fields and forests. Plaque Beach, Bowser's Castle, and Peach's Castle really only come to mind as interesting. Paper Jam, despite suffering the generic SMB area curse, had more to explore and do because they were designed for M&L, who have more mobile capabilities than Bowser.
