Completing quest 2 for the Legend of Zelda was quite difficult, and without a guide would have been nearly impossible. Some of the later tricks to get through the dungeons -- especially the last one -- were devious. You just don't run across that kind of puzzle in modern gaming. I don't recommend trying it without a guide -- or save states. It was very fun, though!
