Review #8: Super Mario 3D World

It's finally here, my first Wii U game review. Depending on how quickly these go, I'll probably do some multiple days in a row. I'll most likely have to with the end of miiverse soon approaching. Hope you've been doing fun stuff, and not pointless things like #Savemiiverse" or "We need miiverse on the Switch!" Seriously, it's not going to work.

  • wall sections. They fire automatically, but if you hold down the run button, they'll go farther and faster when you release the button, which can also help you collect things like coins, Green Stars and Stamps. There's other new power-ups, like the light boxes, and going inside of shells, with a few returning ones, like the infamous Fire Flower, Tanooki Leaf, and Mega Mushroom.

  • Level design: it's true, most of the levels in this game are easy, but they do have some interesting layouts and mechanics. I'll just name a few to save time and comments though: Mount Must Dash almost feels like you're playing a Mario Kart Game, Hands-on Hall has a few good uses for the touchscreen, in addition to a very Japanese-like atmosphere, multiple boss levels that aren't Castles...

  • and the bosses themselves are very creative imo, and there's some side levels where you collect Green Stars, either by the 10-second mystery house levels, some are actually in regular levels for a single one, defeating some enemies or bosses, and the Captain Toad trials. There were also some new enemies like Biddy-Buds, Peepas and Tyfoo Flurries, while bringing back some that haven't been...

  • around in at least a few games, like Bullies, Magikoopas(Kamek doesn't count) and Chargin' Chucks. You'll also find many different ways to solve puzzles for secrets. Levels are almost always 400 or 500 seconds long, and you may find 10 or 100 second restoring clocks, but some may only give you 100 or 30 to finish with just enough clocks to make it to the goal. At the end of boss levels...

  • there are also flagpoles, because getting the top of them along with finding all the Green Stars, Stamps and beating every level with all 5 characters counts towards 100% completion. Beating each level 5 times won't be needed if you have multiple controllers though, or if you're WiiRikeToPray(which you're probably not,) but I don't think that should've been a requirement to beging with.

  • I also liked how the World Maps weren't just copy-pasted from New Super Mario Bros Wii and onward. At first it did start out with Grass, Desert, Ice, but it was different as the game went on. World 7 was Lava, there was no forest world, the mountain world was replaced with a canyon, and World 8 was the Bowser version of Eggmanland: Carnival themed. Each world after that was out in space, but...

  • personally, I kind of liked how the world map didn't dictate the design of every single level, especially with ones like the aforementioned Hands-on Hall, but there could've been more unique to that world still. Music: I absolutely LOOOVE this game's soundtrack. Most of the songs are happy Jazz themed but there's a few different ones, like Hands-on Hall(yeah, I know) The Underground remix...

  • slide remix from SM64 in Plessie's levels, Super Mario Kart Remix in Mount Must Dash, the Captain Toad music from the Galaxy games, a few Boss Battle songs and more. My #1 favorite song is the Boss Battle music in Bowser's Highway Showdown and Bowser's Lava Lake Keep. There's also a Gusty Garden Galaxy remix which I'm actually not that fond of, and in World Crown, the final world you only get...

  • access to from getting every Green Star, Stamp and Golden Flagpole up until that point, has the 3rd version of the Comet Observatory's music that plays when you gain access to the Engine Room ripped straight from it. Other: Getting the top of the flagpole turns it Gold and gives you 10,000 points, instead of an extra life, but I'm okay with this since you only have individual level scores in...

  • this game, and you can do an extra lives trick at the beginning of the game anyway. I tried the original Mario Bros game on the title screen, but the controls felt very precise and somewhat unresponsive. I'll stick with the Game Boy Advance version, thanks. I'm also glad that they went with the reserve item in levels option instead of only outside like in NSMBWii/U. I also like how you actually...

  • need the Mega Mushroom in certain level areas to find secrets, in addition to it lasting longer, something they ruined about it in Mario Kart Wii. Using stamps to make in-game miiverse posts is sometimes fun, but kids always post random ones together for no particular reason, and miiverse ending soon takes the joy out of using them a little. I played this game before the redesign came out, so...

  • I guess that's small comfort. I give this game an 8.5/10. I recommend it to people that want another platforming game to play, especially if you have friends and/or family with similar interests. In all honesty, this wasn't THE 3D Mario game that I was looking for, and I still had more fun playing the Galaxy games, but it was still good for what it was, and I don't regret playing it at all.

  • Maybe with better advertisement, this game would've sold better, along with the Wii U itself. In fact, I wish this was a launch title, not NSMBU, because it shows that Nintendo is still capable of making creative and unique games with lasting impressions, and not just lazy, effortless rehashes of the same thing to get a quick buck. This game deserved "best family game of the year" in 2013 imo.

  • Business is a two-way street, so if Nintendo wants my money, they need to make products I want to buy. In one of ReviewTechUSA'S Switch videos he did in the last month I think, he said something like: "If you blindly accept and agree with everything your favorite companies do, you DON'T get what you want. If you criticise them for doing bad things, and/or things you don't like, you DO get what...

  • you want." That's just me getting back at the Yes-to-everything Nintendrones who refuse to say anything negative about Nintendo, even if it's fact and they could learn from this. But at least most of them are kids who don't know any better, so they'll at least come to understand it in some form of way when they get older, like I did. I was a fan boy myself, then I learned the truth. Last post
