Finally figured out how to turn the stupid Furigana off in Zelda! I wish I figured this out 400 hours of playing earlier, but YEESSS! It was in the settings the whole time, but I didn't know another name for Furigana is "ruby", so I never thought to switch "display ruby" to off. I didn't think it was relevant! Well, now I know what to look for in Mario Odyssey, if I play it in Japanese, that is.

  • What's Furigana?

  • Basically, in Japanesr, it's little characters above Chinese characters that display pronunciation. In theory it's nice if you can't read a word, but in practice, it's intrusive, makes text boxes look really busy, and is very distracting. An example. 憂鬱 (ゆううつ) Now, imagine the characters in parentheses a little smaller and above the first two characters. Now imagine this with a whole long

  • Sentence. Here's a sentence, and what's in parentheses represents the pronunciation of ALL Chinese characters below. (のこ)(じかんせいげんない)(じょうしょうきりゅう)(つか)(ひみつ)(どうくつ)(と)(び) 残る時間制限内、上昇気流を使って秘密の洞窟に飛び上げるのだ。 So, even if I know how to read the word in question, the Furigana is still in the way, and due to Furigana being simpler characters, my eyes track towards them insead, meaning that I never read the

  • Real word I know, just the intrusive pronunciation. Not a fan. I always turn it off if there's an option.

  • It seems like something that works out better on actual paper, rather than being printed onscreen...

  • It's still distracting on paper. Looks essentially the same.

  • Now, why do you suppose they call it "rubi(i)"?

    Yeahs0
  • Look it up on Wikipedia. Apparently text that acts like Furigana in general is called Ruby.

“In British typography, ruby was originally the name for type with a height of 5.5 points, which printers used for interlinear annotations in printed documents. In Japanese, rather than referring to a font size, the word became the name for typeset furigana.” ~Wikipedia

  • Never mind, I apparently didn't pay that much attention. I was just happy it's finally gone. Thanks, Ray!

Then why is it even used if it looks terrible everywhere?!

Because it still has it's uses. Are you a little kid in Japan? Reading aid. Is it a rare and uncommon character? Here's how to read it. Are you trying to give a word a double meaning by writing an alternate reading? Boom. As far as the last two uses go, I'm cool with it. It's the rest of the time it's a nuisance. It's basically the equivalent of training wheels.

It definitely can be quite useful for when you’re still learning kanji and it makes looking up words you don’t know at all simpler, too.

True, it's good for looking up words by pronunciation. It's just really busy. And with some characters, it's pretty ridiculous. Like, what person playing is going to be unable to read 上?
